Street Eye

Oko (z) ulice
Trvání:
1. 9. 2005 - 1. 12. 2005

This project is focused on “children of the street” in the age of 9-15 years, organised in cooperation with social department of city council of Cheb and included in the criminality prevention program of Department of interior of Czech republic. This project comes from similar project Xposse, that took place in New Castle, northern England in 2003.

Social workers were distributing one-time use cameras among the children with an explanation how to use them and instructing the children to take pictures of their daily lives. At a given time, the social workers took the cameras back and later they would give them new cameras along with the photographies the children had taken previously. An authentic and spontaneous collection of photographies emerged: environment, relations, games and entertainment of these children, all is there. The whole project took place from September to December and finished with exhibition of ca 80 photographies in the building of the city council.

It proved that the children spend most of their spare time on the street and are able to responsibly come for an appointment and responsibly perform the given task when motivated. In the gang of children, the main role is not the economic background of the given child, but rather his/her ability to accommodate to the hierarchy of the gang. Some of the pictures were very high quality in the area of documentary or in the sense of taking the feeling of atmosphere.
